Lightbulb Hi, I have a few Q's about GW

Hey everyone,

I need to ask a few questions about GW, mainly because I need to know a bit more about it to decide to buy it or no I'm currently a Lineage 2 subscriber and the first thing I would like to know is if the GW is such a highly varied game like Lineage 2. Vast territories, weapons, armor (and all the combinations), monsters, raid bosses etc. etc. And I'm curious about the bots (yeah, bots will probably make me quit L2). Is there ebaying and all the crap which are on L2 right now (I would like the answer of an ex L2 player here )

Also, I have heard that in GW u need 1-2 weeks max to get your char to the highest lvl. And what next? No more quests and PvE? Only HARDCORE PVP?

Oh and one last thing - are there many (and I mean MANY ) possible combinations to roll your character?

Thanks in advance

usually free = bad, but not true for GW
there are bots in GW but anet are doing what they can to stop this, so its not a problem like it is in games like diablo 2 and endless ages
there is PLENTY of stuff to do in PvE after you reach lvl 20 and/or "beat the game", anet is adding new stuff to do all the time, like the patches introducing the sorrows furnace and the "new underworld"/tombs/blackhole
i play alot of PvE and i honestly havent gotten bored with it yet, and the PvP is really fun and you dont need to be "HARDCORE PVP" to enjoy it

You mean that you only need to buy the game and there aren't any month taxes right?

Erm I forgot one thing to ask about the items - are they like in Diablo2 or Lineage2? In d2 you can always find a literally unique item, because there are millions of possible combinations of the items stats like +skills, +life, +mana etc. etc. and that thing is missing in L2. There is only one type of "staff of life" for example. It cannot give any other things like in diablo2.

You can Re-Roll your character at any town or outpost, you just move your skills and attributes around, and there are plenty of different builds for different situations/playstyles

and as far as unique loot goes, there are randomly dropped magic blue, purple, and golden items, some items have an innate bonus(i.e, dazed 20% less) and some have upgrades (grips, and such, which can be salvaged and put on other weapons of the same type) the upgrades and innate mods have differing levels of effictiveness, and of course, rareity

NOTE

THERE IS NO
CRAFTING
LOGGING
MINING
SMITHING
FISHING
MOUNTS (YOU MAP TELEPORT AFTER GETTING THERE ONCE ON FOOT)
BASKETWEAVING

ALSO NO

GANKING
LOOT STEALING
LINES FOR QUESTS
ETC

consider that the pve (i am pve only , 1000 hours +) and still having fun without touching pvp as extremely lite for now but since only chapter 1 is out (chapter 2 full size game full price OPTIONAL NOT MANDATORY) will add more and they are on track for 2 full size chapters of added content after chapter 2 per year

pve looks good and the future looks good from my PVE perspective

To give you an idea of the items in GW, here are the stats of 2 swords, randomly picked from Ventari's Sell forum...

Grognar's Blade is a Unique Item dropped by Grognard Gravelhead:

Here is a Fellblade, which can have one more mod added to it:

Not sure how they compare to D2 items. But then, it's a different game.

NOTE

NO BIG RAIDS WITH LOTS OF PEOPLE AT ONCE

NO UBER GAMEBREAKING WEAPONS ITEMS OR ARMOR

YOU WILL NEVER FIND A WEAPON OF MAJOR I PAWN YOU OR INVINCIBLE ARMOR

IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE A BROKEN BUILD AND THAT CAN BE CHANGED FAST BY CHANGING ATTRIBUTES AND SKILLS AROUND.

THERE WILL BE A FREE WEEKEND PASS SOON TO TRY OUT A TINY BIT OF THE NEW CHAPTER 2 CONTENT SO YOU MIGHT WANT TO WAIT FOR THAT.

Thanks for the answers

Hmm... If I buy GW factions when it gets released do I have to buy the original GW too? Also I would like to know some more about how does this game deal with the servers (like L2 or d2 again ). On d2 every character can host his own game, but in Lineage2 all players are in 1 server (that one that you've chosen to play).

Btw, I have read the Factions Q&A and I found out that there will be a possibility for alliance vs alliance combat. (dunno if the exact word is alliance) If I'm wrong, aren't there any other possible mass pvp situations in GW?

Thanks

nope but you won't get the storyline from the original GW, and you will only get a few of the skills for the original 6 characters. I'd suggest buying Factions, then if you love it, go ahead and get the original too

you can play each chapter independently without having to buy any others.

everything is on their servers for no chance of hanky panky

servers

one big network broken down into continental server subsets with the international districts so anybody can meet no matter if on the EU , US, KOREA servers

8 players in your mission/explorable area is the limit in chapter 1.

100 in areas/district/town else where

supposedly more in chapter 2 but dont expect 40 man gankfests

EDIT

every party gets their own private instance of the map in question

Nerubz, one thing you need to know is that Guild Wars is not an MMO. You will hear dozens of people calling it that. That is because either they don't know what an MMO properly is, or they honestly believe Guild Wars is one and think (just flat wrongly) that all the things which make it different from a standard MMO are design flaws. GW is not an MMO. You can even ask Anet, they'll tell you.

Despite what you're likely to hear around here from the pve fans and the pvp fans annoyed about the silly items the pve players get, competitive pvp was the main focus of GW's design from the beginning of the game, although once you see the paper-thin setting and plot, the horrendous voice acting, (Captain Calhan was right!) the lack of character customization, and most of the male armor, you won't need me to tell you that.

Keep in mind that all these things are not complaints, but rather warnings of what to expect. Sure, these things could all improve, but I'm not complaining about them, because the game is still fun. And for the record, I mean that both pve and pvp are fun, although I can only stomach pve these days if I have a friend to play with. And I don't mean that it's too hard, though it is in some spots, just really tedious. They seriously need to give everything (including several of the players who are not my friends) better AI. We know they can do it, they made those Zaishen Challenge guys. But it was quite fun solo for as long as I needed to play in order to unlock most of the stuff I need to play decent pvp.

The pvp in this game is great fun. There are many infuriating tendencies about it, which I'll mostly let you learn for yourself, as you kind of have to understand the game for them to infuriate you. (Why do the premades still suck so bad after all these updates? Even the Rt and A premades in the preview event sucked! Why do they teach the newbies wrong? Go ride that red engine straight to hell, paladins!) However they are generally outweighed by the interesting structure of play, and the twinky joy of messing around with builds. A note, since I gather you're probably going to be mostly pve for a while: don't think that what is likely to be your first experience, the Ascalon arena, or the Yak's Bend arena, or wherever else that's a pve-chars arena, is in any way representative of the true pvp experience. Matches there will be short and boring. This is because jiveasses paid for runs to get twinked equipment and stuff they can grief you with.

Of course, the pvp isn't perfect. The image I got from it, from reading the hype before release, was that of something much bigger, longer, and more strategically complex than what you generally get in here. I'm still holding out hope though, because the stuff I hear about Chapter 2 sounds alot more like what I want. The way they implement it is kind of annoying, (this Luxon/Kurzick thing) in that I can just see it entirely failing due to players not behaving as intended, but whatever. It should still be cool, I think.

Ignore Bistromath! I have over 1200 hours on PvE content. Only about 3 of those hours are from PvP.

The truth is, it depends on your taste. Both PvE and PvP have a great wealth of fun to be had. It just depends which one you like. Also, Bistro was right about the crappy plot and voice acting. The people's mouthes don't even move lol.

The reason the AI on enemies is lousy is because otherwise taking on that mob of 10 lvl24 dwarves would be all but impossible. The reason the Henchmen have crappy AI is to encourage players to work together.

No, PvE does not end once you reach level 20 and even if you beat the game. There's tons of things to keep you busy, and to keep PvE fun. Such as high-level areas like Underworld, Fissure of Woe, Tombs, Sorrow's Furnace, and so on. Although the game can kinda seem like it's centered on having the best armor, weapons, and making $$. That is(to a degree) fun and rewarding though, imo. I have 6 PvE characters, of which most have beaten the game and are level 20. And I hardly ever PvP(Rank 0 ftw! ). I've spent [censored ] hours in just PvE alone, and maybe 20 hours of that in PvP. Also the game becomes so much more fun if you are in a fun guild that loves to do the same things as you. So there is tons of stuff to keep you busy without stepping into the PvP realm.
